Pedro Lobo’s ongoing essay “Popular Architecture in Rio de Janeiro” uses sophisticated photographic techniques (large format positive transparencies) to document the architectural marvels of the favelas, or shanty towns, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Captivated by “the order and chaos, creativity in adversity” of substandard housing in communities such as Jacarezinho, Providencia, and Rio das Pedras, Lobo seeks both to celebrate these popular constructions as well as attract attention to the adverse living conditions that deprive its inhabitants of basic sanitary networks and other municipal services.
