by photographer Pius Utomi Ekpei 2003 FiftyCrows PhotoFund Finalist - Africa Region
Pius Utomi Ekpei’s photo narrative bears witness to the case of Amina Lawal, the 31-year old nursing mother and divorcee who, by ruling of the Upper Sharia Court in the town of Funtua, Nigeria, should be taken to a public place, buried up to her neck and stoned to death for committing adultery out of wedlock. The execution was scheduled to take place immediately after she finished weaning her baby for eight months. Additionally, the man with whom she had sexual liaisons was set free for ‘lack of evidence’. In “Amina Lawal Must Live”, Ekpei aims to expose the hypocrisy, prejudice, and misogyny inherent in the Islamic criminal code as it is practiced in the northern states of Nigeria.
