About Gia

Native to Georgia, Chkhatarashvili is a self-taught photographer who began shooting as a young man. His freelance career began in 1990 and he is a member of the Photographer’s Union of Georgia.  He graduated from Tbilisi State University with a degree in philosophy.  Over the past ten years, Chkhatarashvili has taken assignments from the Norwegian Refugee Council, the World Food Program, The Georgian Times, and the German magazine, Vostok.  His photographs have been exhibited in Poland, Norway, and Germany.

As a mid-career photographer having lived his entire life in Georgia, Chkhatarashvili expresses concern about the loss of cultural tradition within a fast-modernizing nation in his essay "Ushguli: A Village at a Crossroad".
