Returning Swallows...
This summer, Napa based photographer Norma I. Quintana is embarking on an interesting project: she will accompany a group of students who were adopted from China by families in California on a trip to their homeland. During the trip Quintana will teach a black and white photography workshop as a way for these young adults to explore their identities, communities and relationship to the country they were born in. Quintana hopes to exhibit and publish some of the resulting work. Please visit the website to learn more about this project and journey. "Swallows are famous for their daring speed and unpredictable paths they will take in flight. Yet no matter how far they fly, they always circle back to their nests."

Gaza Life - new photo essay
Photojournalist Zoriah, has a new Photo essay featured on Warshooter. This series was shot just recently, this spring in the Gaza strip.
Here is an excerpt Zoriah's writeup: To get as close to the people and their lives as possible, I spent one month living in an apartment, on a local's budget in the Gaza Strips most dangerous area, the Shajaiyeh neighborhood.... I believe I was able to capture certain aspects of life in Gaza that the media has missed in the past, namely the daily life of Palestinians and the destruction that surrounds them. ...To show the struggles of the people who search daily for food, medicine, education, housing and safety. The destruction shown in these photos was caused by Israeli Defense Forces. Retaliation for suicide bombings often wipe out entire neighborhoods and destroy infrastructure that thousands rely on. The mental torment of the people by Israeli Defense Forces has taken its toll and recent sanctions have created a large scale humanitarian crisis. These photos represent only a fraction of those taken during my one month stay... Click here to see the essay www.warshooter.com.

VU! Exhibition - 20 years of Agence VU in photos
Retrospective exhibition of the VU photo agency, Curated by Robert Delpire.
July 22 - September 3, 2006 Noorderlicht Photogallery Akerhof 12 Groningen, The Netherlands Tues. - Sun. 11am - 6pm Free admission
www.noorderlicht.com
The exhibition VU! is an overview of the work that 66 different photographers from the VU Agency have produced over the past twenty years. Since it was established in 1986 the renowned Paris photo agency VU has operated with an eccentric credo: it is not the photo that is central, but the photographer. This places Agence VU squarely in the tradition of the magazine from which it takes its name. VU was the first photo-illustrated magazine in France to publish work by illustrious photographers such as Man Ray, André Kertész, Robert Capa and Brassai. Follow these links to find out more about VU and this exhibition.

Child Brides - New York Times Article
FiftyCrows had some great news this past weekend. FiftyCrows IFDP Award Winner, Stephanie Sinclair, had her stunning new work on Child Brides in Afghanistan published in the prestigious New York Times Magazine (July 10, page 45). We are very proud of her. You can view the NY Times article and NPR coverage of the project here.
Here's what Stephanie told us: "This weekend a project very near and dear to my heart will finally be in print in the New York Times Magazine. The story is on child marriages in Afghanistan and I have been working on this more than a year. It was a grueling story to get access to. You should know that this is what I did with the grant money FiftyCrows gave me! I am not sure I would have had the courage or funds to pursue a project like this without your support. And it was so difficult and time consuming to do that there was no way I was going to get a magazine to assign me to shoot this on the idea alone..."
This is the kind of long-term support that our grants and mentoring can provide to documentary photographers who are working in the field. These important essays take dedication and perseverance to bring into public awareness. This is not spot journalism, but a sustained relationship to a story and subject that can only be told through the personal commitment that photographers, like Stephanie and so many others, are willing to make.
Most of the stories we have supported are risky, politically charged and as Stephanie notes above, not even picked up by magazines until AFTER the photographer has invested weeks, if not years, into the story.
Without your support, we in turn, cannot support these dedicated and courageous photographers. We encourage you to pledge your tax-deductible donation to help us continue this important work.
Many thanks!

This New book is a photographic record of a decade of Burning Man celebrations - from its infancy as a performance art exhibition in the late 80's to its growth as a global, community-driven phenomenon today. Photographer Barb Traub captures the sacred and profane through photos of otherworldly artifacts, structures, and costumes that defy description. Contributions from filmmaker Les Blank, Burning Man founder Larry Harvey, Star Trek's Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy, and beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti help to illuminate Traub's unique perspective on this dynamically evolving event.
